The above example contains a two digit code. This code helps identify the root cause. In the above example, Ignore Insert Errors was not checked for the Chatter Follower object, which often results in an error.

Additional example:

• (04) System.DmlException - Update failed. First exception on row 0 with id 500C000000EutgvIAB; first error: FIELD_CUSTOM_VALIDATION_EXCEPTION, Broken by Validation Rule of CFed: []

The above example was caused by a Validation Rule running, which blocked the merge.

General Definitions of Error Codes:

01 - A merge status is not defined

03 - Problems cloning individual child objects

04 - Problems updating the cases themselves

Action Required to Repair:

Error 01 - Go to the Setup Wizard and choose a status for the child case(s)

Error 03 - Often caused when something can be a child case exactly once and the merge process is creating a duplicate. For example, with Chatter Follower or Case Teams (a person can only be a Case Team member once per case)

Error 04 - Likely a Validation Rule is blocking the merge
